Yay!
The Samuel Delany reading was terrific -- looked like it was pretty full -- and afterward we went for drinks with the fabulous Miss Heather - yay! And I bought too many books -- Emma Bull's Territory, Delany's Dhalgren, Night Watch, and this year's best SF, edited by Gardner Dozois, in which Heather has 2 honorable mentions and I have 1.

Will you be going to the final party Friday? I just can't make it. Please tell anyone who might miss me (both of them) that I'm swamped with teaching and an overdue book, and I have my head down, working. Especially Derek Zumsteg, my student, who I swore I would come and see at the parties, and who probably thinks I vanished off the face of the earth.

I have to give Dhalgren the award for "most interrupted book I own."

I'll get a couple chapters in, and it'll be...

"What's on fire? What's leaking? Who's having a crisis? What expensive thing broke?"

It's similar to the problem I have with Heinlein. I'll start those, and they'll get stolen before too long. I should probably look for someone wearing a "I READ STOLEN BOOKS" button.

Dhalgren has always seemed to me like a book that benefits from being interrupted - gives you time to think about the chunk and move it around in your mind before absorbing a whole new lump. Much like adding flour to pancake batter, making the pancake the overall reading experience. Perhaps I'm pushing the comparison too far.
