SFWA Presidency [Apr. 1st, 2007|07:55 am]

I've got to say that I disagree with Jeff VanderMeer's SFWA presidency run and so am also tossing my hat in the ring as a write-in candidate. My platform is a simple two plank one:

Point One: SF writers have exploited their animal companions long enough, refusing to acknowledge the pets who patiently nap in our laps, inspiring new heights of imagination whose inspiration can only be matched by doses of Internet-fueled kitten pictures. From now on, SFWA memberships will be held under the names of one's pets.  In households with multiple pets, it is allowable to rotate the names. In households with multiple writers and one pet, only collaborative efforts will be allowed. Writers without pets will be allowed to register under the generic "Spot".

Point Two: SF writers have rejected the notion of branding too long, and we're going to change that, starting with the names. Fresh and lively surnames like "Kerpow!", "Writerzilla", and "Spinky" will be issued to the Smiths and Browns of the world. A new surname in every pot, that's my campaign motto, and by gum, I'm sticking with it.

Simple and to the point, none of this e-piracy gimcrack kerfuffle or worrying about who lent what to who. Pets and names - the essentials. And this way VanderMeer won't put you in a cage.

I had a third plank involving some combination of the two above, but perhaps I'll just stick with what I have.

All proceeds from my stories will from this day on be directed to my canine companion and housemate, Yellowdog Bam!.

They haven't been before? No wonder his picture looks so sad.

I'm not sure a committee to hand out writer surnames is really the best use of SFWA resources.

You should consider just mandating that they use their porn star names.

I, on the other hand, will pay extra to not have to think about the vast VAST majority of SFWA and porn in the same sentence.

And it's got a fundraising mechanism built right in! ;)

Who was it who asked me the other day what the good of a SFWA membership is? Put me right on the spot.

Oh, yes, Writer Beware is worth it. And some of the legal aid.

The wrangling in SFWA is a perfect model for the wrangling in college faculty meetings, and I have the same reaction: if the wranglers could put some of that same energy into their work, they might have quite a gratifying output.

What is this thing you have about changing my name? And now you're proposing I go by Ada C. Spinky?
