Copyright Left of Center

As you may or may not know, I was on the exploratory committee making recommendations regarding what SFWA's stance on copyright should be. The people on the committee represented a wide range of views, and it was a pleasure to work with such an articulate, civil, thoughtful group. Wisely, they've been asked to be on the new iteration of the committee.

While I think that's a very good thing, the decision to keep Andrew Burt on the committee at all, let alone as its head, is not, to the point where I've declined, as have several of the other members. I do hope some good comes out of this and SFWA moves to a more efficient and effective stance on copyright, but I do not believe this can happen with Burt in charge, both because of the bad publicity that he has already stirred up for SFWA and the lack of willingness to understand viewpoints outside his own that has been showcased in his response to the debate over Scribd.
