I Am A Mutant, Or Why I Consider Myself Reasonably Well Read

When I was in first grade, I was in a pricey private school that gave my mother free tuition since she worked at nearby St. Mary's Academy. The reading curriculum was a set of books that focused on teaching us to not read letter by letter but to learn to recognize letter clusters or entire words, featuring characters Sam and Ann and their dog, whose name I don't remember. For some reason this process took deeply with me - I started reading fast and fluently and began devouring fiction.
