Notes From The Online Markets Panel

Panelists: Caren Gussoff (Brain Harvest), Jordan Lapp (Every Day Fiction), Cat Rambo (Fantasy Magazine), Eric James Stone (Intergalactic Medicine Show)

Panelists spoke both as editors and writers publishing in these markets.

Questions:
Is there a stigma attached to publishing in online markets? A - None of the panelists thought there were.
What is the online business model? A- Variety of approaches including subscriptions, charging for access on per-issue basis, advertising, donations, selling associated merchandise, selling versions in e-book< CD, or printed form.
How can you become a slush reader? A- watch for calls for slush readers on magazine forums or SF Signal
Easy way to start magazine? A - wordpress.org provides the software, many magazines published using WordPress

Tips:
Reading slush is a great way to get a feel for the market.
There's no excuse for not looking at a magazine before submitting when you can get it for free online.
You increase your chances of acceptance RADICALLY by looking at the magazine and reading (and adhering to) the guidelines.
